Here there is only one musical genre. Good music ! If it's good, we like it. It does'nt matter if it is British Rock, Classical, Pop, Soul, Rap, Jazz, Country... If it's good, we want to know about it.haroldwhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02507600140182328734noreply@blogger.comBlogger11125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1585008762874719707.post-41035814698623814342014-02-11T19:03:00.001-08:002014-02-11T19:03:38.936-08:00Country got Cool

Country Music is an interesting topic. At times, it seems to be not the most popular type
of music yet, sales of country music songs keep climbing. I was always a fan. When
I was a kid, we were so excited about having a radio, we listened to all the stations.
It's important to remember, back then - there was no rap, no new age, and no smooth jazz. It was basically
Rock and Roll and Country music.

Artist: Ronnie Milsap
Website: RonnieMilsap.com
Song: He Got You

Ronnie Milsap is a living legend. I have many of his albums.
It's difficult to define the vocal-magic that he has. It's easy to see what makes some artists appealing.
Micheal Jackson had the moves, Frank Sinatra had that smooth-mellow tone...
but Ronnie Milsap is harder to pin down. I know from his web site Bio that he had very humble beginnings. Maybe his magic is that he was able to make something out of nothing ?? A dirt floor and very little food to eat is not a lot to work with.
If someone knows the road he took to stardom - I'd love to here about it.

Let's give a listen to one of my favorites - He Got You

It's almost impossible to keep a band together forever. ALL bands go thru ups and downs.
All of them. As a fan, I keep telling myself "I don't understand why they didn't make more songs"

Artist: Dr. Hook Band -
Dennis Locorriere (lead singer), Ray Saywer (vocals, congos, wore eye patch )
Website: DoctorHook.com
Song: Better Love next time

As a solo artist(amateur/self proclaimed) I found even getting studio time EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.
Getting other musicians and producers to work with me ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. Even when you pay them.

To be honest, it's a miracle that anyone is able to create anything musically. Personality conflicts,
dis-interested musicians, producers too busy with their own lives, not to mention shadey characters
and scam artists.

So for these guys to hold it together for so long - they deserve the Congressional Medal of Freedom !!

This is why it's important to "enjoy em while you got em". Bands with original members last only for a moment.

Dennis Locorriere's (lead singers) voice, can be summed up in one word; tenderness
Also these guys really understand harmony. Anytime a band or group has its own UNIQUE harmony - you got something !!

Listen to the tenderness of Dennis Locorriere's voice and how gently the background singers
deliver the chorus, it's like soft rain.

Jazz is a music that has 9 lives ( at least). There are many eras that I could cover. If I wanted I could go back to Ragtime with Jelly Roll Morton, or maybe the Louis Armstrong era, Benny Goodman, there are many to choose from. But for this post I'll go to ,a more recent Era, the Smooth Jazz Era.

Pat Metheny and David Sandborn are household names for jazz listeners.
For me, the Greats who made LP's are sort of immortal. Many of us have made CD's (including me) but only signed artists have made LP's. Sounds kind of ironic but to be on "wax" is very prestigious.

Artist: David Sandborn
Website: DavidSandborn.com
Song: Carly's Song
LP: Hideaway

I love this LP - Here are some of the atists in his band:
Mark Egan - Bass (upcoming post on him), Hiram Bullock - Guitar (rest in peace) just to name a few.

David Sandborn is so respected through out the industry that he even had a prime time television show called Night Music.

The Saxophone is one of a few instruments where, the musician can alter it's tone, like a voice.
This is why each Sax player has a different tone - even though they are all playing the exact same instrument.
It's not only his mastery of the instrument but also the honey-sweet tone he has perfected.

Something many do not know is that beginners who are learning how to play it, often have to suffer through
being lite-headed during practice. This is because the body has to adjust to constantly running out of air-
due to the large amounts of wind needed to blow sounds . Amazing how something that sounds so great
can be so challenging to master. Sandborn is one of the immortals of jazz, the great part is,
he's a long way from retirement.
Give a listen...

Artist: Pat Metheny Band
Website: PatMetheny.com

Song: Every Summer Night
LP: Full Circle
(original) Band Members : Mark Egan, Danny Gottlieb, Lyle Mays, Pat Metheny

I had the priveledge of seeing The Pat Metheny Band live, years ago. They did close to a 4 hour show - WOW !! As a guitarist myself, I could go on and on about Modal-scales, fingering techniques...
but no, you have to hear this band for yourself.

Things to keep in mind while viewing this video. While we are enraptured by these free flowing
melodies, these artists are busy counting. Yes counting. To enter and exit out of bridges, cadences and constant time signature changes, takes exact (and i mean exact) timing. even to the smallest 64th note.
Metheny is also known for using his guitar pick sideways, to get that smooth, swirling slide sound.

How many different rhythms are they playing on this track ?? - I count nine !!!

Now that we've heard some great songs, it's time to find some great UNknowns.

The 1st thing we'll need is a website that offers great tunes.
Hey, how about AmazingTunes.com - great. There's only 1 problem, we need a site that offers music player embeds . Well, were in luck. AmazingTunes.com also
offers a music player embed , - so here we go...

The name of the song: Meteora
and it's by an Artist name: Marcome
her website: marcome.com

This is what I learned about Marcome. She's from Canada. and her latest album
falls into the category of New Age. It's called River of soul and there are some real
heavy-weight producers for this CD. What do producers actually do (you may ask) ??
well that's another story, for another blog post.

How do I describe this song ?? I think it's somewhere between smooth jazz and
Dream Pop. What do you think ?

To any budding artists out there, is, whenever you have a chance to collaborate with another
artist - take it.
As unbeleivable as it sounds. One guy shaking the tambourine can mean the difference between a
good song and a great song.

Now for our next song...

The name of the song: Wet
and it's by an Artist name: Miro Gee
her website: mirogee.com and www.my2am.com

few of is ever get to tell our story, well this is his story. it's
all there, in his song....

This is the easiest blog I've ever written. I've listened to Kenny Loggins all my life. have all his albums, play them all
the time. His music centers me. whenever I need to get back on track, his music always does the trick.

For me, there are 4 parts to Mr. Loggins music legacy;
His origin (Jim Messina era)
His re-birth (Celebrat Me Home/Whenever I call you friend era) ,
His journey (Heart to Heart - back to Avalon)
His present (Blue Sky Riders)

I tried to find songs that maybe some haven't heard. That was difficult because he's so popular. so I had to rely on
well known hits.

Whenever I call you friend by Kenny Loggins (with Stevie Nicks).
This is a duet featuring Stevie Nicks (I plan to do a different post on Fleetwood Mac)

Something that many may not remember is that Kenny Loggins was one of the premier singers on "We are the World".
a record known world-wide.

Of course i was shocked and disappointed to hear that sony records has ended their music relationship (how weird is that ??)
but glad to hear that he continues to share his gifts with the world.
please visit his fan site at KennyLoggins.com

If you ever get a chance to get "Kenny Loggins live at the Redwoods" - DVD.
I guarentee you will not be dissapointed.

I know there are many other songs I could have picked. Until we meet again, here's one for the road....

As we all know a Soundtrack is a musical accompaniment for a Film, Play (e.g. a Broadway Play) or TV series. This week
we look at 2 of my favorite songs from television.

Before we start out, it's important to remember that listening to the music (of that era) is one of the ONLY ways a younger
person can know what it "felt like" to be around in the 70s.

1st - Room 222 - I watched this as a kid every week. Because I was so young at the time, i have no idea why i loved
the show so much or what it was about or anything. it's kind of funny but the only thing i remember is that i loved it.
Oh yea - i think it was about school teachers. But it was sort of hip for that era. seeing young people on TV was a new thing.
in the previous era, most of the TV personalities had grey hair. (nothing wrong with grey hair).
Room 222 cast:
Lloyd Haynes as Mr. Pete Dixon
Denise Nicholas as Miss Liz McIntyre
Michael Constantine as Mr. Seymour Kaufman
Karen Valentine as Miss Alice Johnson.

The YouTube channel Matt White gets all the credit for this segment, because this item was so hard to find.

For the next tv show tune, we'll go back a little further to a show called Bridget Loves Bernie.
This one goes way back. This one is so hard to find, the YouTube channel is TVRewind and gets all the credit
for this segment. be sure to listen to the vocal version. which is followed up by an orchestrated version
(that's my favorite of the 2 - but I love them both)

Bridget Loves Bernie cast:
Meredith Baxter
David Birney

Please Visit Matt White and TVRewind on YouTube, They have lots more entertaining vids.

musicians make music. celebrities make gossip.

when the Beatles were musicians, the media tracked their music.
when the Beatles became celebrities, the media tracked their fights and controversies.

There is nothing wrong with being a celebrity. Pays great. Just be ready
for the extreme emotional ups and downs of being what other people want you to be and not being
able to be yourself.

There is nothing wrong with being a musician. Just be ready for the extreme emotional ups and downs
of very little public reward or recognition.

2) Decide style of music (rock, jazz, pop, contemporary, gospel ...)

3) PRACTICE - expect to sound - not so great - in the beginning. start by singing your favorite songs. Learn the song !! You should be able to make smooth key changes. knowing the song means you know where the melody is going BEFORE it gets there. let's listen to The Zombies - Care of cell 44 . Listen to how effortlesly he changes keys on his vocal. This is a very difficult key change - they really understand the song. please visit the Zombies official web page at: thezombies.net

4) decide if you will be
a) Solo Act and sing your own background vocals.
b) Solo Act with background singers or
c) Harmonization Group (e.g. The Eagles, 38 Special)

a) Solo Act and sing your own background vocals.
Audiences sort of expect that modern day singers will have some form of background singers. even if it means the singers voice is used as a backing track. if your going to provide a proffessional level recording or performance, having background vocals is mandatory.
This style was made popular by several entertainers, most notably the Carpenters. I don't think anyone has been able to produce such sophisticated self backup singing since.

b) solo act with background singers
background singers make songs. let me rephrase that. background singers make the song. Great backup vocals can take a song from sounding below average to sounding like the special songs that we love and enjoy.

c)Harmonization group (e.g. The Eagles, 38 Special)
This one is tough to achieve. If your just starting out. I would suggest - proceed with caution - on this one. different people have different lives, schedules and motivations. Trying to get several different people to keep the same vision, motivation and talent levels, may be a bit much for beginners. If you go this route try to be as flexible as possible with your band mates. Don't try to control band members - try to incorporate their suggestions into decision making. It's too early to pre-define who is the "leader" and who is replaceable. no one is replaceable !!

WE WILL PICK UP WITH PART 2 - IN THE NEAR FUTURE - this topic is too big to cover in 1 blog post.
Until then here's an old one by Maureen Mcgovern called The Morning After.
please visit her official site at: www.maureenmcgovern.com

These days we live under many false impressions. because of the internet we think there is more opportunity to get your songs heard. but, the opposite is true. there is less opportunity to be heard now.

How can I say that ??
Well I joined the musicians union at age 16. (late 70s/early 80s) - back then, I knew about 40 professional musicians personally - by name. How many musicians do the average person who has made an Mp3
know ?? - probably none.
People make things happen - not web pages.

To be heard,

1) be willing to perform live (this seperates the ARTIST from the hobbyist)
2) be willing to travel (you must FIND the right people)
3) you MUST work with other people - make friends and keep them.
4) be willing to sell merchandise that promotes your music
(when you play live)
5) wear your merchandise
**6) make a music video on youtube or Vimeo
(this is where the internet can be used)
(this is VERY EASY now, it's not like in the past,
now you can create one for FREE)
**7) at your concert say "this song is on FREE download on our website"
on your website offer FREE passes to upcoming concert -
used together, this builds an audience.

If you can't do the things listed above, all is not lost.
If you insist on using the internet as your primary vehicle (even though this is not a good move). then you have to be very creative.

8) collaborate with everyone possible on the internet.
- offer songs for a video game soundtrack.
9) use animation sequences to overlay with your own
sound track ( a.k.a. anime)
for Vimeo or other share media sites.
10) I saved this for last because it should be done last.
Put your songs on music sites.
This should be done last because people are
OVER-RELYING on this method. its not enough !!
Try to find sites that have remote players so other websites can
"pipe in" your music.
AND that offer a back link to your "home" web page.

It's a tough rode now (it was easier years ago). Here's a little song to inspire you on to success...

it's by: Boy Meets Girl
and it's called: Catch a falling star

Well you have tangibles and intangibles ( definable , UNdefinable)

tangibles: genre (pop , country , soul...)
intagibles: you (what makes you unique, desire, star quality)

if the song was created and performed properly - your
essence (experiences, personality) will be captured inside the song - just like a
photograph.

This is most easily accomplished by the singer songwriter because
they have absolute control over the songs creation and performance.

This is more difficult for a band - for many reasons (that's for
a different blog). when singer songwriters write songs, their songs fit
like a glove.

lets look a 2 artists who "had it all together".
Nicolette Larson and Paul Davis.

Artist: Nicolette Larson
Official Website: http://www.nicolettelarson.com/
Song: Lotta love

what do you think this song says about this artist ??
This blog is about online music sites - that have shut down.
These sites were devoted to local UNsigned artists. a.k.a. Indie music
I want to mention 3 sites: youmusic.jp, choosik.com, isound.com
youmusic.jp was an indie music site in japan. it had about 4000 artist, of which
about 1,500 were from the U.S. - all talented.
1) these are 4,000 artists who you will never hear.

choosik.com was a U.S. indie music site with maybe 2,000 artists. Here the
owners did everything right. you might ask - how can someone do everything right
and everything turn out wrong ? well, that is another blog for another day - trust me - it can happen.
2) - the majority of these artists will probably throw in the towel, stop trying. and get a "real job".
Well, "real jobs" cause "real frustrations". just what we need - more frustrated people.

isound.com was a fantastic indie music site with around 1,000 artists. all talented.

3) ever felt kinda down, listened to a song and it made you feel better ?
what does it mean not to have that anymore ?

believe it or not, i've seen birds hear human music - and start dancing. why ???
i've seen dogs hear people singing, and the dog starts trying to sing with them - no kidding.

i don't know what will happen will the music stops. i only know that we won't be able
to dance to it.
here's one 4 the road...
To start things out I've selected 1 of my favorite celebrity bands and also 1 of my favorite unknown (indie) bands.

Pop Stars: SQUEEZE Song: "Tempted"

I cannot do justice to the bio and legacy of such great band, in this brief format. Please visit their officical website: http://www.squeezeofficial.com/

In brief, (*this info provided by wiki*) The band's founding members in March 1974 were Chris Difford (guitar, vocals, lyrics), Glenn Tilbrook (vocals, guitar, music), Jools Holland (keyboards), and Paul Gunn(drums). I think their "Tempted" could be one of the greatest pop songs ever.

Technical perfection: musical concepts, vocals, song structure, melody, simplicity.
Intangibles: they have "it", I don't know what "it" is, but they have it.

Indie: JUZGALZ989 Song: Jasmine

No rising star can shine as brightly as a superstar. But, they shine none the less.
I know absolutely nothing about this indie band. I only know that they sound GREAT !
I discovered them at: http://jukeboxalive.com/
If any one has an idea of who they are and/or their official web page, please let us know.
